But there’s good news: Pelvic floor therapy can help alleviate these symptoms and improve your quality of life.

At our clinic, we specialize in this practice and have helped countless patients overcome their symptoms. What is Pelvic Floor Therapy?

Pelvic floor therapy is a specialized form of physical therapy that focuses on the muscles, tissues and organs that make up the pelvic floor. The pelvic floor is a group of muscles and tissues that provide support for the bladder, uterus and rectum. When these muscles are weak or damaged, it can lead to a variety of symptoms, including:

  • Incontinence
  • Pelvic pain
  • Pain during sex
  • Constipation
  • Bowel and bladder issues
  • Pelvic organ prolapse

It’s designed to strengthen these muscles and improve their function, which can alleviate these symptoms and improve your overall quality of life. At your initial session, our physical therapist will perform an evaluation to determine the extent of your pelvic floor dysfunction and identify any specific areas that need to be addressed. This evaluation may involve a physical examination of the pelvic region, as well as questions about your symptoms, medical history, and lifestyle.

FAQs

What will my first visit look like?

During your evaluation, your therapist will first discuss your health history and current symptoms. Then your breathing, strength, mobility, and posture will be assessed. If these findings indicate pelvic floor dysfunction, with your consent, your therapist may conduct a vaginal or rectal internal examination of your pelvic floor muscles. After your examination, your therapist will discuss her findings and explain what will be included in your treatment plan. You will be given “homework”, which will be tailored to your body and your lifestyle.

What is an internal exam and do I have to do it?

An internal examination will only be conducted by a specially trained therapist with your enthusiastic consent. If you are not feeling 100% comfortable, it is not mandatory! Although it does help your therapist gather valuable information about your body, your comfort is our main priority. You have the right to respectfully decline this examination.
If you decide to continue with this thorough examination, here’s what you can expect. It is similar to a gynecologic exam, but no speculums or stirrups are used. One gloved finger will be inserted into the vaginal and/or rectal canal to assess the pelvic floor musculature. You will be asked to complete some movements and tests
during this exam that will help your therapist determine the integrity and strength of your pelvic floor.

Do you only see women for pelvic floor issues?

Everyone has a pelvic floor! Pelvic floor therapy can help not only women but also men and children. At EPT, we do not complete internal examinations on children. Pelvic floor therapy has been shown to help men with pelvic pain, chronic constipation, and urinary issues, such as leakage or frequency.
Pelvic floor therapy for children typically involves lots of parental education, exercise prescriptions, and dietary recommendations.

How do I know if pelvic floor therapy is right for me?

If you are struggling with any of the symptoms listed above and you are ready to make your health and wellbeing a priority, we can help you!
Recovery takes time and dedication with attending scheduled appointments and diligently completing a home exercise program. If you are ready to make that commitment to yourself, we are ready to help you achieve your goals.

Who Can Benefit From Pelvic Floor Therapy?

Pelvic floor therapy can be beneficial for a variety of people, including:

  • Women who have given birth
  • Women going through menopause
  • Men with prostate issues
  • Individuals with pelvic pain or discomfort
  • Athletes who want to improve their core strength
